The Lancia (Launch)

Seamanship Museum  >  The boats of the Seamanship Museum

One of the most used boats in the coasts of Romagna, was the Lancia, or launch, which could have one or two masts, according to its dimensions, and vela a terzo (1). The bigger launches with two masts could reach nine or ten meters and were called "lancioni" (big launches).
The launches had a stretched keel and had their own particular fishing equipment, to allow fishing with a landing net as well as trawl fishing. There was also a type of launch suitable for fishing dolphins with the use of a harpoon.

At the prow and stern, the launches have two vertical poles and along the sides, two trunks to support the ballast, needed to keep the stability of the boat during fishing.

The launch was steered by just one fisherman and by a boy. It was an extremely hard life, there were no means to light a fire not even to cook, any problem and any danger would be faced alone. For this reason, the "lancéri" were not only experts of the sea and the weather, but also independent characters, who didn't want to be part of a crew.

The Museo della Marineria (Seamanship Museum) of Cesenatico, has a launch in exhibition named "Aldina", built in 1949 in Cattolica. It measures 7.65 meters in length and 2.23 meters in width. The restrained decoration has a red and white hull with a black border. It is equipped with vela al terzo and bowknot. The yellow sail is marked with a rising sun.

When the sea tourism on the Romagna coast started to spread in the 50s and 60s, several fishermen used their launches to take tourist to sea trips.

The motor boat version of the launch is still built in modern shipyards and used mainly for sport fishing.
